Mission, Vision & Core Values

As a division of CommonSpirit Health, CHI Health shares this Mission Statement with CommonSpirit healthcare ministries across the country.

Our Mission

As CommonSpirit Health, we make the healing presence of God known in our world by improving the health of the people we serve, especially those who are vulnerable, while we advance social justice for all.

CommonSpirit Health Mission Message

From Andrew Santos...

As the Senior Vice President of Mission Integration, I am excited to share our new Mission Statement with you.  This Mission Statement, that we share with all CommonSpirit Health ministries across the country, describes WHO we are and WHY we exist.

“As CommonSpirit Health, we make the healing presence of God known in our world by improving the health of the people we serve, especially those who are vulnerable, while we advance social justice for all.”

I would like to take a few minutes to share with you what I see as the message of this Mission:

“As CommonSpirit Health” recalls the Scriptural basis of our name and our ministry. Derived from 1 Cor. 12:7, we trust that the manifestation of the Spirit is with us, the providential hand of our Father is upon us as we take up the calling to advance the common good.

“We make the healing presence of God known in our world” is a prophetic statement that invites us to reflect on the incarnational nature of our ministry and our call to actively participate in revealing the loving, healing presence of God alive in the world.  It reminds us of the fact that we are a ministry with a rich faith tradition and spirituality that is central to who we are.

“By improving the health of the people we serve” moves us beyond our focus on sickness and disease and calls us to reflect on what “health” fully means. It reminds us of a fundamental purpose to serve others and not be served - and to see the people in front of us, not an illness or injury. It invites us to reflect on whole-person health encompassing mental, physical and spiritual health. It challenges us to work to offer health to our patients as well as their families, our communities and our coworkers.   Our desire to improve health also helps us appreciate our collaboration with our community partners who help us meet the full spectrum of healthcare needs, as well as our academic partners who help advance and improve medical science so we may ever better serve our people.

“Especially those who are vulnerable” harkens us to that which has been a part of Catholic healthcare since its inception and was especially lived out by our founding religious congregations who always saw special focus and care to the outcast, the poor, the abandoned - whoever was truly vulnerable -- as central to their calling. Our commitment to all who are scared, shunned, hurting, and vulnerable remains strong. Our commitment to charity care and community benefit is a shining example of this commitment to our communities.

“While we advance social justice for all” challenges us to be advocates for a more just and healthy society. We know that economic conditions, lack of access to care, limited availability of healthy food, poor housing conditions, marginalization, etc. all contribute to sickness, disease and injury. Each person as a child of God deserves dignity and reverence, and we will always advocate for the sacredness of all life.

As you can see, this statement is a true reflection of our identity as a ministry of the Church and one that inspires us. We share this joyful news with you out of the deep appreciation and gratitude we have for your ongoing support of CHI Health.  This is our Mission Statement . . . this is who we are; this is why we exist – for you and all in our communities.
