Bariatric Surgery Can Improve More Than Weight

Bariatric surgery can lead to significant improvements in overall health and may improve or help manage other health conditions, including:

  • Type 2 diabetes
  • High Blood Pressure
  • Obstructive sleep apnea
  • High cholesterol
  • Joint pain and mobility
  • GERD
  • PCOS

For many patients, these improvements can mean better health and greater quality of life. You don’t need to know which procedure is right for you before you begin. Our team will help you understand your options and determine which approach best supports your health, needs, and goals.

Program Information

Traditional Bariatric Surgery options include:

  • Sleeve Gastrectomy: A restrictive procedure to reduce the size of the stomach limiting the amount of food and liquid it can hold. By removing the portion of the stomach that produces the “hunger hormone” ghrelin you will also feel less hungry.
  • Roux-en-Y Gastric Bypass (RYGB): A malabsorptive and restrictive procedure that involves creating a small stomach pouch that is connected to the small intestine. In addition to restricting the amount of food you eat, this procedure bypasses the first section of the small intestine, limiting the absorption of calories.
  • Duodenal Switch (DS): A malabsorptive and restrictive procedure similar to the gastric bypass where less of the intestine is used. This procedure is usually reserved for people with a body mass index greater than 50.
  • Single Anastomosis Duodeno-ileal Bypass (SADI-S): A malabsorptive and restrictive procedure with significant metabolic benefits. This procedure combines the sleeve gastrectomy with an intestinal bypass and is usually reserved for people with a body mass index greater than 50.
  • Conversion and Revision Surgery: Expert care for patients needing adjustments or revisions to previous bariatric procedures. Including gastric band removals.

Transformative Care, No Incisions! CHI Health Weight Management is proud to be the first program in our area to offer these innovative procedures, minimizing recovery time and maximizing patient comfort. Performed under general anesthesia, these procedures are incision-free, scar-free, and typically allow patients to return home the same day and resume normal activities within 2-3 days.

  • Endoscopic Sleeve Gastroplasty (ESG): Our specially trained surgeons utilize a small endoscopic device, passed through the mouth, to create a smaller, sleeve-like stomach. This reduces stomach volume, promoting satiety with smaller food intake. Typically for individuals with a BMI between 30-50.
  • Transoral Outlet Reduction (TORe): For patients experiencing weight regain after gastric bypass. Our surgeons use a small endoscopic device to effectively retighten and reduce the size of a stretched stomach pouch.

You will begin with Bariatric Surgery Orientation. This no-cost class is your introduction to the program, giving you the information you need to understand your options and what comes next. You don’t need to have everything figured out, our team is here to empower you with the information you need to make the best choice for you.

During orientation, you’ll learn about:

  • Procedure options
  • Our multidisciplinary care team.
  • The steps along the program pathway.
  • What to expect before and after surgery.
  • Insurance coverage and requirements.
  • How our team will support you along the way.
