Blood or Body Fluid Exposure Process

Step 1: Wash or irrigate the exposed area immediately

  • Skin - wash with soap and water.
  • Eyes - irrigate with running water or saline for 15 to 20 minutes.
  • Mouth - swish with water and spit.

During office hours: Call Employee Health

After office hours (including nights, weekends, holidays): Call a House Supervisor/Charge Nurse or Clinic Leader. Upon contacting the appropriate House Supervisor/Charge Nurse or Clinic Leader, you will be directed to step-by-step instructions, including forms to be used. These instructions and forms are located on MyCHI. Go to any workstation and open www.mychihealth.com and select Employee Health from the Services menu in the blue navigation bar.

Step 3: Submit an IRIS to report this incident

To access IRIS, go to any workstation and open www.mychihealth.com and select IRIS Reporter from the Tools & Resources menu in the blue navigation bar.

Non-Employees, including students, volunteers, contractors/agency and non-employed medical staff: You need to submit an IRIS regardless of employment status. If you need help, please work with appropriate leader for assistance.
