CHI Health Nebraska Heart

CHI Health Nebraska Heart rests on a twenty-acre campus on 91st Street just North of Nebraska Hwy 2 in Southeast Lincoln.

Welcome and information desk at CHI Health Nebraska Heart.

Private patient rooms are complete with private bath and shower as well as fold-out chair for a family member.

On the second floor of the Heart Hospital, two waiting areas are available to family and visitors.

The larger of the three on campus, this waiting room includes cable television, telephone, computer access, wifi, and a library of books.

Cafe Corazon offers room service for patients and a variety of meals including heart-healthy items, made-to-order breakfast, fruit and salad options and ice cream.

At Cafe Corazon, visitors may dine inside or sit outside on the patio and enjoy the view of the adjacent lake.

Nurses stations on each pod offer a 'birds-eye' view of patient rooms and close access to patients. Our patients appreciate the low nurse-to-patient ratio which ensures better service to our patients and their family members.

It's not just one cardiologist, one surgeon, or one staff member that defines us. It's our entire team that makes Nebraska Heart, all heart.

The 64-slice CT technology allows patients to noninvasively image the coronary arteries and other vessels.  Physicians view the coronary arteries without doing a more invasive heart catheterization and obtain a three-dimensional image of the heart.

CHI Health Nebraska Heart provides a full array of diagnostic testing for cardiac, vascular, and thoracic disease. Here, traditional x-ray is performed to help the cardiologist view the heart muscle and surrounding organs such as the lungs.

Here in one of the three cath labs, patients may have vascular, electrophysiology, and general cardiology procedures done to check the electrical system of their heart, check for blockages, or have a pacemaker implanted. Patients avoid being moved from lab to lab and speed up their recovery and shorten their hospital stay.

Two operating rooms are located on the first floor of the Heart Hospital. Patients have accessibility to full comprehensive surgical treatments including heart by-pass surgery, valve repair and replacement, esophageal surgery, peripheral vascular surgery and aortic aneurysm stent grafting.

The hybrid suite allows cardiovascular surgeons, cardiologists, imaging specialists and support staff to work together during surgery and other interventions. The equipment and capabilities within the suite enable the team to act quickly if necessary. For example, if complications arise during a heart catheterization procedure, a surgeon can quickly be called in to perform surgery in the same room.

The Clinical Laboratory at Nebraska Heart provides comprehensive testing for patients as well as serving as a resource for off-site clinical, research, and corporate outreach clients. The 24-hour lab is unique to the industry in its team approach to management. Each employee contributes to a dynamic exchange of ideas, expertise, and abilities that make the laboratory a high-energy, fast-paced, and integral component of patient care.

One of the main responsibilities of the pharmacy is to ensure that medication use is as safe as possible for patients. The Pharmacy assists nurses, respiratory therapists, and clinicians to follow the 'five rights of medication use': right patient, right drug, right dose, right route, and right time. We do this by reviewing orders and entering them into the computer as well as making sure barcodes are present on all medications.

Respiratory therapists work with surgeons and cardiologists as well as pulmonologists and primary care physicians, in the treatment of pulmonary disease and cardiac surgery recovery. In addition, Nebraska Heart has an in-house pulmonary function laboratory and assists consulting pulmonary and gastroenterology physicians with endoscopy services.

Nebraska Heart Institute

NHI originated with the desire of the founding physicians to develop both their own range of services as well as the ability to provide these services to communities throughout the region. This vision holds true today, as NHI delivers leading-edge services to Nebraska and northern Kansas. Our network of offices and affiliated hospital-based clinics enables patients to receive timely care close to home.

When patients visit the Nebraska Heart Institute's Medical Office Building they are greeted by our front desk staff where they are then directed to the clinic offices on second floor or admitted for a procedure in the cath lab.

At Nebraska Heart, an echocardiogram is a test that uses sound waves to create a moving picture of the heart. The picture is much more detailed than an x-ray image and involves no radiation. Echocardiography works well for most patients and allows doctors to see the heart beating and to visualize many of the structures of the heart.

The INR Clinic (International Normalized Ratio), is a service established to monitor and manage the medication(s) that patients take to prevent blood clots. Nurses, working in conjunction with the patients physician, will check blood tests and adjust the dose of warfarin (Coumadin) as well as other medicines that may be needed.

The Nebraska Heart Institute's Lipid Clinic specializes in treating people with elevated cholesterol and triglyceride levels. The program involves medical evaluation, lifestyle assessment, blood testing, diet and exercise counseling, and medication regiments. The Lipid Clinic's health care team includes cardiologists, registered nurses, dietitians, and an exercise physiologist.

At Nebraska Heart, nuclear testing may be performed for two reasons. The first is to evaluate patients who have signs and symptoms of coronary artery disease (CAD), but have inconclusive exams or laboratory testing. The second reason to perform nuclear testing is to evaluate patients with CAD and to determine their course of treatment. Treatment methods include medications, angioplasty, stent graft and open-heart surgery.

Nebraska Heart also performs nuclear testing to outreach clinics. Nuclear testing is available to evaluate patients who have signs and symptoms of coronary artery disease (CAD), but have inconclusive exams or laboratory testing. This test allows us to evaluate patients with CAD and to determine their course of treatment. Treatment methods include medications, angioplasty, stent graft and open-heart surgery.

A treadmill stress test consists of a patient walking on a treadmill and exercising until they cannot continue. The treadmill increases in speed and incline throughout the test following a special protocol. A person does not need to worry about being physically fit for this test, it measures your heart function not your exercise endurance. The entire test takes approximately one hour.
