Neuromuscular Ultrasound

What is Neuromuscular Ultrasound?

Neuromuscular ultrasound (NM US) uses high-frequency and dynamic ultrasound technology to visualize the structure of nerves and muscles. It is highly useful as an adjunct to the clinical evaluation and EMG/NCS (which assesses function of nerves and muscles). It is performed and interpreted by the same neurologist.

Preparing for your NM US:

No special preparation is required.

What to expect day of NM US:

The test lasts from 30 to 60 minutes. You may be placed in a gown to allow access to arms and/or legs. During the test, a special gel is placed between your skin and the ultrasound probe. The gel is easily wiped away with a towel on completion of the test.
