Dr. Nelson is a Nebraska native who grew up in Blair, Nebraska. He received his Bachelor of Science degree from Nebraska Wesleyan University in Lincoln, Nebraska. He received his Doctor of Podiatric Medicine degree from Des Moines University in Des Moines, Iowa in 2000. His residency training was done at The Western Pennsylvania Hospital in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania and Joint Township District Memorial Hospital in St. Mary's, Ohio. Dr. Nelson is board certified in foot surgery. Dr. Nelson is also board certified in ankle and rearfoot reconstructive surgery which requires advanced surgical training and there are very few others that have this in the state of Nebraska.
Dr. Nelson serves on the Podiatry Board for the State of Nebraska as a physician member and is active in the Nebraska State Board of Health. His role as a physician member is to help protect the general population from mistreatment and review specific incidences on a case by case basis.
Dr. Nelson is active with the American College of Foot and Ankle Surgeons (ACFAS) and is serving as the ACFAS President from 2/2020-2/2021. He is active in selected committees that plan and coordinate activities for numerous foot and ankle surgeons across the country. He is also a journal article reviewer for The Journal of Foot and Ankle Surgery as well as the Journal of the American Podiatric Medical Association. He is also well published in several medical journals pertaining to several maladies involving the foot and ankle and has also written chapters in textbooks regarding foot and ankle conditions and treatment.
When not involved with work, Dr. Nelson enjoys spending time with his wife Jenny and their three boys, Jake, Alex and Reid. He participates in coaching his young sons in basketball and also stays active himself running and playing basketball.
