For the second year in a row, CHI Health CUMC - Bergan Mercy has been recognized as a Center of Excellence for its WatchmanⓇ cardiovascular procedures by the CommonSpirit Health CV Service line. The hospital is one of only three in the country to receive this prestigious recognition, and the only one to achieve the designation two years in a row.
“One of the things that is great this year is that we were one of only three to receive the COE designation as compared to one of nine sites last year,” Executive Medical Director for CHI Health Heart Institute Jeffrey Carstens said. “The bar this year was set quite a bit higher and we still met the criteria.”
Carstens added that it is even more significant considering they earned this distinction through the pandemic and some of the challenges and limits thereof.
“We were still able to maintain high volumes and provide high quality of care,” Carstens noted, adding that CHI Health CUMC-Bergan Mercy performed the highest number of WatchmanⓇ procedures in the system during the past year.
“The imperative for becoming a CommonSpirit LAAO Center of Excellence is to ensure the delivery of optimal care for one of the newer technologies available to patients with non-valvular atrial fibrillation,” System Physician Vice President, Cardiovascular Service Line Nezar Falluji said. “The designation process used predetermined criteria and a point system to identify top performing programs.”
The Center of Excellence designation at CUMC - Bergan Mercy will remain in effect through June 2022.
