May 13, 2019
CHI Health St. Francis hosted its annual appreciation luncheon on Thursday, April 25, at Grand Island Riverside Golf Club.
In 2018, a total of 376 volunteers donated 23,698 hours of time to St. Francis. These volunteers, the Auxiliary board, Foundation board and trustees were honor and thanked during the event.
Carolyn Davis and Gerri Williams were named as the 2018 Volunteers of the Year.
Davis, a volunteer for 17 years, delivers patient mail, serves as a weekly Pastoral Services visitor, makes blankets and neck pillows by hand for oncology patients and has sewn more than 350 layettes for new parents. Each layette includes a blanket, two receiving blankets, two bibs, two burp cloths, an outfit and a sleeper.
Williams, a three-year volunteer, received five separate nomination for logging approximately 1,500 hours. She escorts patients, delivers information to different areas, creates job aids for staff, stocks inventory and preps supplies. During 2018, Williams inventoried and labeled each wheelchair in the hospital for easy return to their proper location.
In addition, special recognition was given to Broderic Root a former Project Search student turned volunteer and volunteer Shirley Molt who has logged more than 899 hours in her 10-months of service.
In all, 18 nominations were received for the Volunteer of the Year award. Those nominated also include Brian Andersen, Toni Arnold, Sam Barton, Dan Beck, Karen Bortz, Ted Buck, Lois Dunham, Gerri Fairchild, Deb Hehnke, Kari Hooker-Leep, Pat Kasparek, Leon Nelson, Cecilia Royle, Bob Rupp, Lola Ruzicka, Allan Spary, Kathy Schutt and Beth Stecker.
"Our hospital volunteers generously give their gift of time to make our patients' days brighter," says Anita Lewandowski Brown, St. Francis Volunteer Services/Gift Shop supervisor. "Volunteers are truly an extension of the St. Francis family, serving and providing care for patients and guests, making a significant impact. This is a great opportunity to say thanks to everyone who gives of their time and talents to volunteer at St. Francis."
