What is Runner's Knee?

According to CHI Health Clinic orthopedic surgeons, runner’s knee is a very common condition. Patients with it complain of the gradual onset of pain of the front or anterior aspect of the knee. This pain is thought to be due to the overload of the cartilage on the backside of the knee cap.

How do you develop runner’s knee?

Factors that contribute to the development of runner’s knee include: imbalances in the flexibility and strength of the quadriceps muscles in the front of the thigh and hamstrings muscles in the back. Weakness in other areas of the body such as the hips and core can place additional stress on the knee leading to pain

How do you treat runner’s knee?

The vast majority of people with runner’s knee improve without surgery. Conservative treatment includes anti-inflammatory medicines, physical therapy, and on occasion an injection. Appropriate footwear plus cross training can help prevent runner’s knee and in some cases keep it from coming back.
