Grant Funds at Work

Through grant funds and charitable contributions, the Foundation supports innovative initiatives and a wide variety of programs. Some of these programs include:

  • Teen-Net - Teaches good prenatal and parenting skills, increases graduation rates for teen mothers and improves self-esteem.
  • TeleHealth - Another visible, far-reaching program is the Mid-Nebraska Telemedicine Network which has brought the advantages of medical specialists and educational presentations to thousands. This technology offers health and education services to rural Central Nebraska communities.
  • Early Development Network - Provides services and supports that are designed based on the needs of children birth to age three and their families.  A child is eligible for Early Development Network services if he or she is not developing typically, or has been diagnosed with a health condition that will affect his or her development.

Grants and Special Projects

The Good Samaritan Foundation incorporates a comprehensive grants program as part of its overall development plan for CHI Health Good Samaritan.  Past and current grant monies have been secured from a variety of sources, including federal, state, local government, foundations and corporate foundations.

The Foundation ensures that any project undertaken correlates with the overall strategic plan and mission of the hospital to ensure successful project implementation and to facilitate the desired outcomes of the various grant programs. Examples of a few programs currently being supported through the grants development program include:

Critical Access Hospital Network: Good Samaritan serves as the hub facility for a twelve member Critical Access Hospital Network. As the hub facility, Good Samaritan provides overall network coordination and facilitates the securing of grant funds to support the network. This network is recognized as one of the largest critical access hospital networks in the country.

Telehealth: The Mid-Nebraska Telemedicine Network became operational in December 1995 with five rural network members. Since that time, the network has continued to grow to include ten rural Nebraska and two rural Kansas network members. Good Samaritan serves as the hub facility for the network. Activity over the network includes teleradiology, medical consults and educational offerings.

Cancer Survivors:  Through funding from the Susan G. Komen Foundation, the Cancer Center celebrates several cancer survivors events including Cancer Survivor's Day.  The Cancer Center also facilitates a support group, "A Time to Heal," for breast cancer survivors.

Pension Protection Act of 2006

The Pension Protection Act of 2006 (PPA 2006) was passed by Congress and signed into law by President Bush on August 17, 2006.  It opens up powerful new options for charitable giving from IRAs.

The new law says that people age 70 ½ and older can instruct IRA trustees to make transfers to 501(c)3 organizations they support without incurring taxable income on those amounts.  Up to $100,000 can be given annually in this manner, up to December 31, 2009.

No charitable deductions are allowed but gift amounts will not be included in the donor’s income.  Donors must gift through a traditional or Roth IRA; other retirement plans such as pensions and 401(k) plans and others are not eligible.  Only the IRA trustee can transfer gift amounts to a qualified organization.  If the IRA owners withdraw funds and then contribute to the charity separately, amounts withdrawn will be included in the donor’s gross income.  IRA gifts cannot be made to “life income gifts” such as Charitable Gift Annuities.

To make a charitable gift through your IRA, just contact your IRA trustee to transfer your gift amount to a 501(c)3 organization.
