Understanding Rotator Cuffs
What is the rotator cuff?
According to Matthew Dilisio, Orthopedic Surgeon, CHI Health Clinic, the rotator cuff are the muscles and the tendons that surround the shoulder joint that keep the ball and the socket and allow people to elevate their arm without pain.
Are there different types of rotator cuff conditions?
There is a variety of rotator cuff conditions. The tendon often tears and this ranges anywhere from a little bit of inflammation or tearing all the way to a massive, retractive full thickness tear.
How do you treat a rotator cuff tear?
Some types of rotator cuff tears respond well to therapy where the remaining rotator cuff muscles are strengthened. Other times surgery is necessary to make the repair – to fix the tendon back down to the bone.
