Expert Video Consultations for Patients with Burn Wounds

Health care professionals in rural hospitals often use telehealth to seek the expertise of the CHI Health St. Elizabeth Burn Center when they are treating a patient with severe burns in their emergency room. Burn Center staff view the patient’s wounds via secure video connection and make care recommendations.

Many times, they offer advice on whether the patient needs to be transferred for more extensive care. In 2014, CHI Health St. Elizabeth Burn Center handled more than 4,000 calls.

The St. Elizabeth Regional Burn and Wound Center is internationally recognized for outstanding research and for providing the latest treatments and procedures for serious burns or for wounds that will not heal.

St. Elizabeth Burn Center

The St. Elizabeth Burn Center, the region’s first dedicated burn unit, continues to save lives throughout the multi-state region. We are verified by the American College of Surgeons (ACS) and the American Burn Association (ABA).

This special designation offers burn patients and the community:

  • specialized care, services, equipment and staff trained to treat the most critical burn injuries
  • leadership in research, education and prevention

Telehealth Isn't Just for Burn Patients

Telehealth technology isn't just used for burn patients. Rural physicians also use it for consults on sick and injured infants that may need to be transferred to a CHI Health neonatal intensive care unit. It is also used for follow-up with bariatric surgery and cardiac patients who do not live in the same town as a CHI Health hospital.

The Nebraska Statewide Telehealth Network

Since 2004, CHI Health St. Elizabeth has participated in the Nebraska Statewide Telehealth Network. Using video technology to extend health care resources to those in need, the network connects more than 110 hospitals, health departments, physician offices, mental health centers and rural health clinics across the state.

Telehealth Programs Save Money

According to the Nebraska Statewide Telehealth Network, telehealth programs statewide saved patients about $667,000 just in travel costs in 2013.
