Time to Go Home After Having a Baby

You did it. You delivered a healthy baby - now it’s time to go home. But before you leave the hospital you and your baby must reach a few milestones. You, your physician, and your baby’s physician will determine when it’s safe to go home.

Milestones for mom include pain level, urinating, vaginal discharge, and independent walking.

Milestones for baby include urinating/stooling, feedings, temperature, respirations, heart rate, hearing test and newborn screening.

If mom and baby pass the tests - heading home is next. Make sure you have a rear-facing car seat to bring your baby home. Nurses can help you make sure baby fits in there comfortably.
