Research shows that with screening, lung cancer can be diagnosed earlier and treated more successfully. In fact, found in its earliest stage, lung cancer is 80 percent curable.
The CHI Health Lung Center is designed to detect lung cancer and other non-cancer lung conditions at their earliest stages and help patients access life-saving care as quickly as possible. It is for patients who have had an abnormal chest scan or suspicious lesion, and for those who have been previously diagnosed with lung cancer and require routine observation.
Lung Cancer Screening
The Lung Center offers cancer screenings for high risk patients and can help coordinate the process, if needed.
We are currently screening people who are at highest risk for lung cancer. To be considered high risk you must be:
- Aged 55-80
- Current smoker or former smoker who has quit in the last 15 years and
- Smoking history of at least 30 "pack years"
American Cancer Society defines 30 pack years as:
- One pack per day for 30 years
- Two packs per day for 15 years
- Three packs per day for 10 years
If you are at high risk, please call 402-717-LUNG today to schedule a screening. The screening is performed by low dose computed tomography (LDCT), which uses a small dose of radiation to produce numerous X-ray like pictures to create a high-definition image of the lung. This procedure is simple and non-invasive.
Diagnosing Lung Cancer
The Lung Center utilizes two state-of-the-art technologies to detect and diagnose lung cancer and non-cancer lung conditions. These advanced tools provide physicians with the most accurate diagnostic information available, making it easier to diagnose lung cancers less invasively than ever before and to precisely identify the stage of cancer.
- Endobronchial Ultrasound (EBUS)
EBUS technology allows for viewing and biopsying the regions of the lungs and mediastinum that have traditionally required more invasive surgical procedures to evaluate. This tool is specifically designed for evaluating and biopsying central lymph nodes and lesions near the airway within the lungs.
- Super Dimension Electromagnetic Navigation Bronchoscopy® (ENB)
Super Dimension is designed to extend the reach of the conventional bronchoscope, this technology enables pulmonary physicians to make early diagnoses of benign and malignant lung lesions, enhancing treatment options and avoiding the need for higher risk procedures.
Once a diagnosis is made and disease stage is determined, each patient's condition is presented at a weekly multidisciplinary conference where medical and radiation oncologists, thoracic surgeons, and pulmonologists discuss the most advanced individual treatment options for the patient. Thereafter, the Lung Center will work in collaboration with the patients’ primary care provider and oncologist to coordinate and determine the best plan of care.
Lung Center Staff
The Lung Center is staffed by a multidisciplinary team dedicated to and specially trained in the diagnosis and treatment of lung cancer.
