NICU Medical Team

The NICU team who will be involved in the care of your baby consists of specially trained health care professionals and is lead by a neonatologist and neonatal nurse practitioners (NNP). The neonatologist makes daily rounds and is available at all times. There is a neonatal nurse practitioner in the hospital 24-hours-a-day, seven-days-a-week. Members of the NICU team include:

Neonatologist

A neonatologist is specifically trained to handle the most complex and high-risk situations of newborn care. Neonatologists are medical doctors who have completed three additional years of training specifically in newborn intensive care. Neonatologists receive certification from the American Board of Pediatrics and by the sub-board of Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine. Neonatologists work mainly in the special care nurseries of newborn intensive care units of hospitals. Meet our neonatologists.

Neonatal nurse practitioners (NNP)

Neonatal nurse practitioners are master or doctoral prepared registered nurses who have pass a national certification examination. NNPs are licensure through the state to manage common health problems and chronic health conditions including prescribing treatment and medications. Another term for a nurse practitioner is an advanced practice registered nurse (APRN).

NICU Nurses

NICU nurses are registered nurses who have specialized education and training to care for the complex medical needs of sick and preterm infants.

Respiratory therapists (RT)

Respiratory therapists are trained in NICU ventilation techniques.

Pharmacists

Our pharmacists are dedicated specifically to overseeing the medications of babies in the NICU.

Dieticians

Our dieticians are committed to the special dietary needs of babies.

Speech Therapists

Our speech therapists specially trained to support the developmental feeding and swallowing needs of premature babies.

Occupational and Physical Therapists

Our occupational and physical therapists supporting the muscle and skeletal development of premature babies.

Social Workers

Social workers are devoted to helping support family needs and providing resources.

Lactation Consultants

Lactation consultants trained to help mothers of NICU babies breastfeed.
