Neonatal-Perinatal Medicine is a subspecialty of pediatrics concerned with the care of critically ill newborn and premature infants. A neonatologist specializes in illnesses affecting newborns, both premature and full-term. Conditions that effect newborns may include breathing disorders, infections, or birth defects. They also consult with obstetricians, pediatricians, and family physicians about conditions affecting newborn infants and care for mothers who have high-risk pregnancies.
Neonatologists work mainly in the NICU at our CHI Health hospitals. After your infant has been discharged, a Neonatologist may provide short-term care on an outpatient basis.
