First healthcare facility in Nebraska to be designated
(OMAHA, Neb.) - Alegent Creighton Health is pleased to announce that Bergan Mercy Medical Center has achieved Pathway to Excellence® designation by the American Nurses Credentialing Center (ANCC). It is the first healthcare facility in Nebraska to earn the designation.
The Pathway to Excellence designation identifies the elements of work environments where nurses can flourish. The designation substantiates the professional satisfaction of nurses at Bergan Mercy Medical Center and identifies it as one of the best places to work.
Kevin Schwedhelm, MSN, RN, chief nurse executive at Bergan Mercy Medical Center, said that he "is a better nurse leader for having been on this journey. Each day, our team ensures all of the Pathway standards are being met for our patients and their families. The way our nursing team and the whole hospital are engaged in this process is amazing."
The Pathway to Excellence designation is granted based on the confirmed presence of characteristics known as "The Pathway to Excellence Criteria." For an organization to earn the Pathway to Excellence distinction, it must successfully undergo a thorough review process that documents foundational quality initiatives in creating a positive work environment - as defined by nurses and supported by research. These initiatives must be present in the facility’s practices, policies, and culture. Nurses in the organization verify the presence of the criteria in the organization through participation in a completely confidential online survey.
"I am confident that if you are cared for by an organization that has a nursing excellence designation, like Pathway to Excellence, the care will be the best that nursing has to offer," said Jane Carmody, DNP, RN, CENP, vice president and chief nursing officer for Alegent Creighton Health. "Bergan Mercy joins two other hospitals in the Alegent Creighton Health system with nursing excellence designations and more are on the Pathway journey. The goal for 2020 is to have all sites of care within Alegent Creighton Health achieve an excellence designation for nursing."
Both Mercy Hospital and Lakeside Hospital have earned Magnet® status from the ANCC. Mercy, first designated in 2005 and designated a second time in 2010, remains western Iowa’s only Magnet facility. Lakeside was recognized as a Magnet hospital in 2008.
As a Pathway to Excellence designated organization, Bergan Mercy Medical Center is committed to nurses, to what nurses identify as important to their practice, and to valuing nurses’ contributions in the workplace. This designation confirms to the public that nurses working at Bergan Mercy Medical Center know their efforts are supported. The honor encourages other nurses to join their colleagues in this desirable and nurturing environment.
"Our nurses, physicians and employees work each day to care for the body, mind and spirit of every patient," said Marie Knedler, president of Bergan Mercy Medical Center. "This designation tells people that our staff puts patients first and also honors them for their dedication to that work."
The Pathway to Excellence designation is perfectly suited to small and medium-sized healthcare organizations, but is attainable by all healthcare facilities around the world.
