Hanafan honored with McDermott Award

“He knows your face, sometimes your name and knows you are part of the community,” Barb Skaff, community support specialist at Alegent Creighton Health Mercy Hospital, said of Mayor Tom Hanafan.

Mercy’s LIFE Group honored Hanafan with the Mother Mary Vincent McDermott Award during its 20th annual spaghetti luncheon Tuesday at St. John Lutheran Church.

The award is given each year to an individual or organization that has helped diminish the stigma of mental illness and had a positive influence on mental health services in the community. It is named after the woman who co-founded St. Bernard Hospital in 1887 to provide mental health services.

“Mayor Tom Hanafan has done a great job of supporting those who live with mental illness in Council Bluffs,” said Christie Ohl, LIFE Group member who served as master of ceremonies.
