Nurse talks about how she fought – and won – her battle against breast cancer

Her heart pounding, Paulette Barrier sat in her radiologist’s office in "total disbelief" as he repeated the words that would forever change her life: "You have breast cancer."

It was exactly one year ago when Barrier, a registered nurse at Alegent Creighton Health Mercy Hospital, was diagnosed with the most common and feared forms of cancer. During the last 12 months, she has endured multiple surgeries, including a double mastectomy and the subsequent reconstructive process. She still faces one more surgery on her breasts.

Despite the emotional upheaval of the diagnosis followed by months of painful medical procedures, Barrier has maintained a very positive, proactive attitude about her cancer.
