Record heat sends 3 dozen to hospitals

About three dozen people had been treated this week at Omaha-area emergency rooms during what has been record persistent heat. Omaha tied a record Friday for Aug. 30 with a high of 99 degrees.

Through Thursday, the week’s average daily temperature in Omaha was 85.7 degrees, well above the record of 83.6 set in 1881, according to the National Weather Service.

The scorching temperatures will continue for at least one more day. Highs today are likely to be in the 90s for the ninth day in a row.

Dr. William Gossman, assistant director of emergency medicine at Alegent Creighton Health Creighton University Medical Center, is quoted in the story discussing how those most susceptible to the prolonged heat are the elderly, outdoor workers and athletes.
