Three runners are crossing the country to raise awareness about sarcoma – and raise money for research on the often overlooked type of cancer.

Miles 2 Give members Ryan Priest and John McKay took time out from their 3,000-mile journey from San Francisco to Washington Tuesday to meet with Council Bluffs survivor Penny Hofer and talk to media representatives.

The team will run in Hofer’s honor Thursday, when they expect to be in the Atlantic area, Priest said.

Hofer, a registered nurse at the Alegent Creighton Clinic on Madison Avenue, was diagnosed with sarcoma in November 2010 after she found a lump on the back of her left leg “a little bigger than a softball.” The next day, she showed it to a colleague, who suggested she have an ultrasound. When the results were abnormal, she was referred on to have an MRI and biopsy, which confirmed the bad news.
