OMAHA, Neb. - Alegent Creighton Health has been named one of the top five mid-sized
health systems, and one of the nation's top 15 health systems, by Truven Health
Analytics, a leading provider of information and solutions to improve the cost
and quality of healthcare. This is the first time that Alegent Creighton Health
has been named to the health system list.
Researchers from the Truven Health Analytics 100 Top Hospitals® program analyzed
the clinical quality and efficiency of 328 health systems, including a total
of 95 mid-sized health systems, to identify the top 15.
"When you have an organization that values quality and safety, and when you
constantly reinforce the importance of that and put it into practice, it becomes
the fabric of the organization," said Richard A. Hachten II, president and chief
executive officer of Alegent Creighton Health. "Our employees have earned this
honor. Each day, they are all committed to providing our patients with high-quality
care throughout our health system."
Compared with health systems in their category (small, medium or large), the
top five health systems in each category posted an 11.6 percent advantage on
the patient-safety index; a 6.4 percent shorter average length of stay and 3.4
percent lower overall mortality rates.
A care management program, initiated by Alegent Creighton Health, has shown
to reduce patient readmissions and improve patient satisfaction. Caregivers
utilize an evidence-based formula to determine if a patient is at risk of being
readmitted after discharge from the hospital. Care managers then contact those
at-risk patients while they are still in the hospital and then after they return
home to verify that they understand their discharge instructions, make their
follow-up appointments and take their prescriptions correctly.
Jean Chenoweth, senior vice president for performance improvement and 100 Top
Hospitals® program at Truven Health Analytics, said that "the winners are really
the people who live in the communities Alegent Creighton Health hospitals serve.
A winner of the 15 Top Health Systems award is an organization that provides
high-quality care." Chenoweth added that as "health systems move further into
healthcare reform, consistency of hospital and physician outcomes in every community
served is the holy grail."
Researchers evaluated U.S. health systems with two or more short-term, general,
non-federal hospitals; cardiac and orthopedic hospitals; and critical access
hospitals in the study. Eight metrics that gauge clinical quality and efficiency
were assessed: mortality rate, 30-day readmission rate, adherence to clinical
standards of care (evidence-based core measures published by CMS), and HCAHPS
patient survey score - part of a national initiative sponsored by the United
States Department of Health and Human Services to measure the quality of care
The study relied on public data from the 2010 and 2011 Medicare Provider Analysis
and Review (MedPAR) data and the CMS Hospital Compare data sets. Researchers
from Truven Health Analytics, formerly the Healthcare business of Thomson Reuters,
has analyzed and reported on the performance of individual hospitals since 1993.
This is the fifth year for the 15 Top Health Systems program.
The top health systems were announced in the April 15th edition of Modern Healthcare
magazine. In February, Truven Health Analytics named Alegent Creighton Health
Immanuel Medical Center as one the country's 100 Top Hospitals®.
