Physician Plays 'Amazing' Role in Family's Health

Article Date: Aug 1, 2012

Cindy Janssen, D.O.If you're wondering how to minimize stress while handling your family's health needs, take a tip from Marisa Tomlinson of Papillion. She found a family doctor who is the calm in the midst of her family's multi-tasking storm.

"She's amazing," said Tomlinson. "Dr. Janssen and I clicked immediately when we met, and my family has been seeing her for six years.

"We are a healthcare-problem family," Tomlinson confesses. "My sons get sick all the time. When I call, the staff knows my voice on the phone. They are super great – and I am thrilled with the quality of care."

Tomlinson, a special education paraprofessional, is also pleased that Cindy Janssen, D.O., family practice, has moved to the new Alegent Health Clinic in La Vista at 96th Street and Giles Road. The clinic includes digital X-ray services, physical therapy and a pharmacy.

"This is going to save me huge amounts of time with my three boys and our multiple activities," she said. "If I can get everyone seen by the doctor and pick up prescriptions on the same trip, that's awesome. I also love the upgraded X-ray capability – I have sporty boys who often need those X-rays."

Tomlinson keeps close watch on the healthcare needs of her sons Cody, 15, Ethan, 10, and Aidan, 5. In particular, Cody has Type I diabetes and Aidan makes lots of visits to the doctor during cold and flu season due to a suppressed immune system.

"Dr. Janssen goes out of her way for my sons, for all of us," said Tomlinson. "She's been such a support - I can't even tell you how much I adore her."

When Cody was hospitalized, Dr. Janssen drove to Alegent Health Bergan Mercy Medical Center to check on him even though hospitalists were handling his care.

When Ethan got his first flu shot at age 6, it took Dr. Janssen, two nurses and Tomlinson to hold him down.

"Ethan freaked out," Tomlinson said. ‘He was yelling ‘Don't touch me, don't touch me, get away from me!' He was still flailing, kicking and screaming when it was done."

Tomlinson had to tell Ethan: "Dude, it's over."

"I was so thankful that Dr. Janssen and everyone stayed so calm, she kept reassuring him and explaining what they were doing -- even though he was hollering," she said. "They were wonderful."

When Aidan had an allergic reaction to a kindergarten immunization, Dr. Janssen and two more nurses came running to the exam room. They gave him Benadryl, took his blood pressure and kept talking reassuringly to him.

"It was totally scary, but I was so impressed that they all just dropped everything and stayed right by his side until they were sure he was okay," she said.

It isn't all about the boys, either. Tomlinson, who is going through a divorce, appreciates Dr. Janssen's focus on all aspects of her health.

"She is just as concerned with my feelings and mental state as with my physical being," said Tomlinson. "She asks how I'm doing when I bring the kids in and when I see her for myself. She's even called me personally when she knew I was having a hard time."

In addition to 11 family practice and internal medicine physicians, five OB/GYN physicians will join the Alegent Health Clinic location on Aug. 1. The clinic has extended hours, too.

"When Dr. Janssen is out, we have seen other doctors and they all take their time with you," said Tomlinson. "You feel like they are really paying attention and listening to what is going on with you. You hear horror stories about a doctor who doesn't listen, but that's not true with those doctors at all."

Tomlinson has one more reason to be pleased. The new Alegent Health Clinic is just about five minutes from her home.

"The doctors are amazing, the nurses are just as high-caliber, and I could not be happier with them," she said. "Even if they weren't closer, they are worth the drive."

I agree with absolutely everything Ms Tomlinson said. Dr. Janssen is truly an amazing doctor. As an RN I have known and worked with many physicians, and she is one of the best! I live close to Immanuel Hospital, but gladly make the drive to LaVista to see her, as does my entire family.

Ms Tomlinson hit the nail on the head. Dr Janssen is kind, compassionate and thorough. I know when I walk through the door that she and Jill are going to do everything they can to make sure my family and I stay healthy. She listens to her patients and actually takes what they say into account - a rare trait in the medical profession these days. Thanks Dr J!!!
