Salt: What you should know

The battle of the bulging belt line is challenging enough, but an assault on salt may prove even tougher.

Calories can be decreased largely by portion control. Salt lurks in huge amounts in surprising places, including lunch meats, salad dressings and breads.

Medical experts increasingly view excessive sodium, a key element in salt, as a major contributor to high blood pressure, strokes and heart disease.

Scott Carollo, M.D., an Alegent Health Clinic cardiologist, says lowering American’s love of salt won’t be easy, but it can be done.
