While there he spent a year as the chief editor of the medical school journal Eklektikos and served as the student body president. He completed a three-year internal medicine residency at LDS Hospital in Salt Lake City after which he transitioned to active duty with United States Air Force, serving two years as an internal medicine specialist at Laughlin Air Force Base in Texas. Dr. Van De Graaff commenced a three-year fellowship in cardiovascular medicine at Wilford Hall Medical Center in San Antonio, Texas, where his specialized training included diagnostic nuclear cardiology and device therapy for heart rhythm conditions. He was a primary investigator for the landmark SCD-HeFT trial, a study of defibrillators in patients with congestive heart failure. From late 2003 to 2004 he served as an intensive care specialist at Landstuhl Regional Medical Center in Germany where he cared for the seriously injured troops from the Iraq and Afghanistan conflicts. Upon leaving the Air Force in 2004 Dr. Van De Graaff joined Nebraska Heart Institute in Omaha and in 2008 transitioned to the Heart and Vascular Specialists at CHI Health Clinic.
