Omaha, Neb. – The independence that driving provides can foster self-reliance and confidence. But the skills required for driving can often decline with age. When elderly or disabled loved ones reach the point in which they can no longer safely operate a vehicle or comprehend the rules of the road, it is important for family to take control.

Alegent Health Immanuel Medical Center’s Rehabilitation Center offers a driver’s rehabilitation program, designed to help gauge an individual’s ability to drive safely. Therapists analyze several key skills related to driving, including:

  • Can this person read signs clearly?

  • Is this person having difficulty making judgments while driving?

  • Does this person have a slowed reaction time?

A thorough driving assessment is performed before a patient enters the program. This evaluates medical history, visual/perceptual skills, reaction time, cognition, transfer skills, basic driving knowledge and adaptive equipment needs. Based on the information provided, recommendations are then made for the future.

The Immanuel Rehabilitation Center accepts Medicare, Medicaid and a host of other insurance providers. Your care coordinator will assist you in understanding your insurance benefits. We are also available to help you apply for alternate funding if necessary.
