COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa –Alegent Health Mercy Hospital’s Jennifer Achenbach, RN, MSN, ARNP, CEN, is among the top nurse practitioners in the nation. She along with Martha Hoffman Goedert, ARNP, are recipients of the prestigious State Awards for Excellence by the American Academy of Nurse Practitioners (AANP). Since 1991 the award has recognized nurse practitioners in each state who demonstrate excellence in practice, research, nurse practitioner education and community affairs.

Jennifer Achenbach is the nurse practitioner award winner for Iowa. She is Mercy Hospital’s Emergency Department clinical coordinator and Trauma coordinator. Jennifer is honored to have received this award and says good mentoring along with her focus on the patient is what it’s all about. “My role is to continue providing quality patient care and be a mentor for my staff. I was lucky to have great mentors and I want to give back,” she says.

Martha Hoffman Goedert is the Nebraska AANP recipient due to her extensive work as a nurse practitioner midwife and educator. Martha was instrumental in introducing midwifery to Mercy Hospital in 1999 when she began working there. Throughout her 31-year career, she has delivered more than 7,000 babies and has volunteered extensively with the community’s uninsured or underinsured families. “It’s been my greatest privilege to share in the birthing journey with families and prepare the best resting spot for the newborns. Mercy Hospital is a special place filled with exceptional nurses who create miracles everyday,” said Hoffman Goedert.

During the award ceremony, Drs. Joseph Hoagbin and Jeff Jacobs were also named State Award winners for Nurse Practitioner Advocates for Iowa and Nebraska, respectively. Dr. Hoagbin is a hospitalist and quality officer for Mercy Hospital. Dr. Jacobs is a family practice physician for the Alegent Health Clinic. Both physicians were recognized for their significant efforts towards increasing the awareness and acceptance of nurse practitioners.
