Memorial Service Planned for Influential Sister of Mercy

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa –A memorial service will be held for Sister Mary Martina Woulfe at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital on Monday, July 7th at 2:30 p.m. in the hospital chapel, followed by an Irish tea from 3 – 4 p.m. Sister passed away Sunday, June 22 at Bishop Drumm Care Center in Johnston, Iowa.

Sister Martina was born in Limerick, Ireland in 1913 and was among 14 young women who came to Council Bluffs in 1928 to enter the convent of the Sisters of Mercy at Mount Loretto. She made her perpetual vows in 1934 and graduated from the Mercy Hospital School of Nursing in 1935. She received her Bachelor of Science in Nursing from Creighton University in 1940.

Sister began her ministry at Mercy as a floor nurse, continued her studies in Chicago during 1941 and returned to Mercy to become Supervisor of the Department of Surgery where she served until 1965. She then served as an administrator at Mercy Hospital in Des Moines and St. Anthony Community Hospital in Pocatello, Idaho until 1973.

From that time until February of this year, Sister Martina served in various capacities at Bishop Drumm Care Center in the Des Moines and Johnston area.

Sister Martina was the recipient of many awards including being recognized as one of the 100 Great Iowa Nurses in 2007 and received the Lifetime Achievement Award from the Mercy Hospital Alumnae Association in September of that same year.
