COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa—Katie Hiller, a Certified Nursing Assistant (CNA) at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital, has been awarded a $3,000 scholarship from the Iowa Hospital Education and Research Foundation (IHERF), which is supported by the Iowa Hospital Association (IHA). Katie is among 34 outstanding students from all over Iowa who have received assistance this year from the IHERF Health Care Careers Scholarship Program.

“Katie is an outstanding student and wonderful addition to our staff here at Mercy Hospital. She exemplifies the Mission of Alegent Health by providing high-quality care to the body, mind and spirit of patients she comes into contact with everyday,” said Marie Knedler, vice president and chief operating officer of Alegent Health.

Iowa hospitals established the scholarship program in 2004 to help address the ongoing shortage of health care professionals and encourage young Iowans to remain in the state as they establish their careers. The scholarship program offers students as much as $3,000 per academic year, or a maximum of $6,000 over two years. Over its first four years, 113 students have benefited from IHERF scholarships.

In exchange for that financial support, scholarship-receiving students agree to work one year in an Iowa hospital for each year they receive an award.

Hospital leaders from all parts of the state evaluated scholarship applications from more than 195 students, who were judged on grade-point average, a written personal statement, letters of reference, and extracurricular, community and health care-related activities.

Katie works full-time as a CNA at Mercy Hospital during the summers and over winter break. She is currently in her fourth year at the University of Iowa in Iowa City and plans on graduating with a Nursing degree in December, 2009.
