OMAHA, Neb. — A survey of the top 100 integrated health networks in the nation ranks Alegent Health among the very best. The annual survey, conducted by Verispan, ranked Alegent Health 9th on the list of the top 100 health systems. That is up four spots from 2007.

On a 100-point scale, Alegent Health scored an 87.29, just four points behind the number one ranked health system in the country. Verispan, which is regarded as the nation’s premier rating system, surveyed 580 health systems in the United States and graded them on operations, quality, scope of services and efficiency. In a change to the criteria this year, Verispan required a greater number of services for the health centers, such as chest pain centers, which it felt demonstrated comprehensive care. Alegent Health has accredited chest pain centers in each of its five Omaha area acute care hospitals.

“Improved occupancy, well-integrated information systems and strong operating margins are characteristics of all the leaders on the list,” said Alegent Health CEO Wayne Sensor. “And all of those characteristics are integral to our commitment to keep patients at the center of every decision we make. Improving occupancy means having beds available when patients need them and as a not-for-profit health care system, improved margins puts more money back into patient care – sometimes in the form of new technology, new facilities or improved processes.”

Alegent Health is the only Nebraska health network to make the top 100 list and the only one in the Midwest to make the top ten. “We recognize that achievements like this place us in the position of being a leader in health care in our community, our state and our nation,” said Sensor. “It’s a responsibility – a privilege that we welcome.”

Alegent Health has taken part in the survey for nine years and has been ranked for four years – each year climbing the ranking ladder. In 2005, Alegent Health was 28th on the list; in 2006 it moved up to 17th place; in 2007 Alegent Health earned the 13th ranking and in 2008, it broke through the top ten landing in 9th place.

Verispan is a Chicago-based research firm with an 11 year history of measuring the efficiency and effectiveness of American healthcare networks. The complete list of the 2008 Top 100 Integrated Health Networks (IHN) list can be found in the February issue of Modern Healthcare Magazine.
