$52 million initiative will double the number of beds, provide new operating rooms and expand maternity care capacity OMAHA, Neb. – Alegent Health Lakeside Hospital ceremoniously begins a two-year initiative to nearly double the hospital’s capacity by holding a groundbreaking celebration on Thursday, August 23 at 2 p.m. on the campus located at 168th and West Center Road. The event highlights a $52 million dollar enhancement and renovation project announced earlier this year to better meet the tremendous health care needs of the rapidly growing communities in west Omaha and western Douglas County. “This investment will ensure we are able to continue providing exceptional, high-quality care for the growing population in west Omaha and western Douglas County. Not only does this expansion of Lakeside Hospital represent Alegent Health’s commitment to building the next generation of health care for the communities we serve, it also demonstrates our commitment to investing in the health and welfare of our patients now and in the future,” said Alegent Health CEO Wayne Sensor. The multi-million dollar project planned for Lakeside Hospital is the result of a comprehensive, year-long initiative involving physicians, staff, patients and the community to identify local needs of the area. The architectural design and enhanced services will also further Alegent Health’s goal of delivering world-class, patient-centered care by efficiently and effectively addressing consumer needs. Construction at Lakeside is expected to begin within the next few months with completion scheduled for summer 2009. Highlights of the Lakeside Hospital project include:
  • An increase in the number of medical and surgical beds from the current 64 to 96 beds, with enough unfinished space for another 32 beds.
  • An improved and expanded surgical suite, featuring seven advanced operating rooms and two minor procedure rooms.
  • An expansion of the Intensive Care Unit (ICU) to 16 beds, and the addition of an eight-bed unit dedicated to monitoring cardiac patients.
  • An expansion of women’s and children’s services with an increase in the number of obstetric beds from the current 15 to 24, in addition to the Level II Neonatal Intensive Care Unit (NICU) that opened in January.
  • Lakeside Hospital is the first full-service hospital dedicated to caring for the health of the more than 165,000 people living in the area. Since it opened in 2004, the hospital has consistently been recognized by Professional Research Consultants as a top performing hospital in the country in terms of patients’ perception of overall quality of care. While this afternoon’s groundbreaking is based on projected clinical volumes through the year 2015, the 38-acre Lakeside Hospital campus allows for additional development in the future and includes a Wellness Center and three medical office buildings. “Looking beyond the tremendous growth in patient volume that we’ve seen here at Lakeside, the changing medical technology and consumer expectations are also contributing to the need for expansion at Lakeside Hospital,’’ said Cindy Alloway, vice president and chief operating officer for Lakeside Hospital. “As a faith-based provider of care for the entire community, we will continue to live our Mission and raise the bar on the high-quality care we provide.” The Lakeside Hospital project follows the recent announcement of expansions taking place at Alegent Health’s other metro hospitals. This includes the nearly $200 million investment to expand and renovate the facilities and services of Alegent Health’s Bergan Mercy and Immanuel Medical Center campuses, a $42 million project taking place at Midlands Hospital which will expand the emergency department, create a new intensive care unit and make upgrades to diagnostic imaging services and a $27 million project at Mercy Hospital in Council Bluffs, Iowa to expand the surgery and intensive care units and create a new hospital entrance for patient and visitor convenience. Alegent Health has selected Holland Basham Architects, headquartered in Omaha, in partnership with HKS of Dallas, Tex. as architectural partners for this project. Meyers-Carlisle-Leapley (MCL), headquartered in Omaha and McCarthy, headquartered in St. Louis, Missouri will serve as the general contractors for construction. Alegent Health is the largest not-for-profit, faith-based healthcare system in Nebraska and southwestern Iowa with nine acute care hospitals, more than 100 sites of service, over 1,300 physicians on its medical staff and roughly 8,600 employees. Alegent Health is making healthcare better with an exceptional commitment to quality and by providing patient focused care for the body, mind and spirit of every person consistent with its faith-based mission. Alegent Health continues the health ministry begun by its sponsors, Catholic Health Initiatives and Immanuel Health Systems, more than a hundred years ago.
