Hoagbin named Alegent Health Mercy Hospital Campus Medical Director, Quality Officer

COUNCIL BLUFFS, Iowa –Joseph E. Hoagbin, M.D. has been named Alegent Health Mercy Hospital campus Medical Director and Quality Officer. In this capacity, Dr. Hoagbin will have the overall responsibility for management of various medical-related activities regarding the quality improvement and clinical administrative coordinator of related activities. He will also serve as the medical staff liaison.

Dr. Hoagbin joined the Alegent Health Mercy Hospital family in 1976 as a staff physician and soon after became the medical director of the Emergency Department, a role he maintained for 26 years. Dr. Hoagbin is currently the medical director of the hospitalist program at Mercy and formally served as the hospital’s chief of staff. He has been a member of Mercy Hospital quality committees for most of his tenure.

Dr. Hoagbin graduated from the University of Michigan School of Medicine, Ann Arbor, Mich.,with his postgraduate medical education at the University of Nebraska Medical Center in Omaha, Neb.

Dr. Hoagbin’s many professional accomplishments throughout his career include initiating the Quality Improvement Program in the federally funded Ryan White program while teaching at the University of Nebraska Medical Center. He was also invited to speak in Washington D.C. to staff of the Health Resources Services Administration under the US Department of Health and Human Services.

It is the intent of the Alegent Health Board of Directors to have a physician serve as Campus Medical Director and Quality Officer at each metro campus. Mercy Hospital is the second campus within the Alegent Health system to initiate this new leadership role.

The newly created position at Alegent Health Mercy Hospital will serve us well as we continue to provide excellent quality care and accommodate the changing needs of our patients.
