Michael T. DeFreece
Michael DeFreece, a representative of Catholic Health Initiatives, has served as a Director on the CHI Health Board since 2009, most recently as Board Vice Chair (appointed January 1, 2011). In addition, he is a member of the following CHI Health Board Committees: Compensation, Executive, Finance, Internal Audit and Compliance Advisory, and Lasting Hope Recovery Center.
Mr. DeFreece currently serves as Chairman of the Board, minority-interest owner and consultant to H-Card, LLC. H-Card was initially formed as a division of MarketSphere Consulting and now operates as a freestanding Delaware limited liability company. H-Card specializes in providing expedited electronic payment services and arranging lines of credit through Wells Fargo to fund the supply chain for the health care industry – hospitals and health systems.
Mr. DeFreece officially retired at the end of 2007 from MarketSphere Consulting, LLC, where he was Chairman of the Board and Chief Administrative Officer and also continued to provide services to the health care industry.
Prior to joining MarketSphere, DeFreece was a Managing Director of the McCarthy Group, an Omaha-based private equity firm. The McCarthy organization was the principal sponsor in the formation of MarketSphere in 2002.
Mr. DeFreece retired from Arthur Andersen in 2001 where he spent more than 34 years serving a variety of industries, with special emphasis on the health care industry. He is a Fellow in the Health Care Financial Management Association and is a member of the American Institute of Certified Public Accountants (AICPA) and the Nebraska Society of Certified Public Accountants. DeFreece was also a member of the AICPA’s National Health Care Committee for many years.
Mr. DeFreece served on the Board, Audit Committee and was the Chair of the Compensation Committee of Specialty Laboratories, Inc. (Specialty). Specialty, based in Southern California, was a public company traded on the New York Stock Exchange that specialized in providing esoteric laboratory procedures to the health care industry. Specialty was sold to AmeriPath (now part of Quest Diagnostics) in 2006.
Mr. DeFreece has been actively involved in several community and charitable organizations including, the Boy Scouts, the University of Nebraska at Omaha Alumni Association, the Omaha Regional Community of the Sisters of Mercy, and the Sisters of Charity of Leavenworth Health System – Board member, Executive Committee member and Chair of the Finance Committee.
